English Language
The Department of Languages is one of the earliest departments in Mountain Top University. The department offers two academic programmes in English Language and French. The English Language programme is fully activated and on course for the delivery of Bachelor’s degree while the French programme presently satisfies the general studies requirements of the University while awaiting its full activation for the award of Bachelor’s degree. In addition to their commitment to their Bachelor’s degree responsibility, the two programmes provide essential services for the University community and its environs. They both run proficiency courses to hone the English and French language skills of people of all ages and competences. The focal point of the department is the production of employable graduates and entrepreneurs whose services are English and French language based, especially in the development of communicative competence and training in linguistic and critical thinking. With the availability of the state-of-the-art language laboratory and responsible/responsive cream of staff whose concerns are not just in the now but also in the hereafter, it is certain that students of the department should expect an academic life full of impact and impartation. The objectives of the B.A. degree programme in English are:
- To train students to acquire adequate communicative competence in both spoken and written varieties of the English language.
- To equip the students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English language (including its varieties) through a detailed study of its sound system, its lexicon, its syntax, semantics and usage.
- To train students to develop a critical appreciation of the norms of literature through the study of its various genres.
- To provide a wide range of literary experience with the acquisition of an in-depth literary culture in Literature in English and an exposure to the norms of critical idioms applicable not only to English literature but also in varying degrees to other literatures.
- To promote the acquisition of expertise in English studies and to encourage the development of literary creativity in the different genres of literature.
- To instill the virtues of hard-work, discipline and respect for the law of our land
- To produce English Language graduates who are globally relevant through the use of innovations in Information and Communication Technology [ICT] and who would creatively produce communication materials through sound research techniques to meet societal needs.
- To produce English Language graduates who will be partners in the search for solutions to the myriads of problems confronting society.
- To produce God fearing English Language graduates who will be role models and are dedicated to improving and making the society a better place
UTME REQUIREMENTS
Candidates applying to Mountain Top University are expected to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and attain the National Aggregate Score. This is a statutory requirement for entry into Nigerian universities. Candidates are required to apply for programmes of their choice by completing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registration Forms. They are to ensure that their UTME subject combination qualifies them for their chosen programmes.
Candidates must take at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations [UTME], English Language, Literature in English and any other two subjects from the Social Sciences and the Arts. It is required that candidates must possess 5 O’ Level Credits at one sitting and 6 O’ Level Credits at two sittings including English Language, Mathematics and Literature-in-English.
DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have obtained five credit passes at one sitting or six credits passes at two sittings at the ‘O’ Level/Senior Secondary Certificate (WAEC; NECO, etc.). Such credits must include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics. In addition, candidates must possess two “A” level passes in relevant subjects including English Language and Literature.
