MTU Mission

The mission of Mountain Top University is the provision of excellent facilities for the training of men and women in various academic, professional and vocational disciplines in an atmosphere that will enhance the simultaneous development of their spiritual, mental and physical faculties, in order to produce morally upright and academically sound graduates with specialised skills and value systems, who will be independent, invariably self-employable and who will be able to impact positively on the development (be it in leadership, academic, public and the industrial sectors) of their communities, the Nigerian society and the global community at large.

THE STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) CENTRE

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) CENTRE is under the office and supervision of the Vice-Chancellor. The Centre is headed by the SIWES Director who jointly work with College and Department SIWES Coordinators for successful SIWES operations. The Centre is currently located at the first floor of the College of Management Science and Humanities Complex.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK SCHEME (SIWES)

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is National Universities Commission (NUC) mandatory training program for some courses, as part of the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard in Nigerian Universities. SIWES is funded by the Federal Government and coordinated by the Industry Training Fund (ITF) under the supervision of the NUC. It is jointly implemented by the Universities and employers of labor. The objectives of SIWES are:

  1. to provide avenue for students to acquire relevant job skills and experience in their course of study,
  2. to expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the University,
  3. to assist students in making transition from the university to work place environment,
  4. to enhance students contacts for later job placement,
  5. To provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between academics and actual practice,
  6. To enlist and strengthen employer involvement in the entire educational process of preparing graduates for employment.

FUNCTIONS/ TASKS OF MTU SIWES CENTRE

  1. Develop, implement, and regularly review guidelines for SIWES.
  2. Registration of eligible students for Industrial Training (IT).
  3. Compilation of list of students from different Colleges for SIWES.
  4. Timely collection, completion, and submission of all ITF forms/ documents (master list, placement list, direct e-payment form, ITF form 8) to the supervising ITF office.
  5. Identify placement opportunities for students and assist in placement of students on attachment with employers.
  6. Issue introductory letters to students for the employers.
  7. Organize orientation programmes for all students going for IT in collaboration with ITF
  8. Ensure that students have all required documents for successful placement and completion of IT training before embarking on SIWES.
  9. Ensure master placement list is timely prepared and submitted to Industrial Training Fund and National Universities Commission yearly (not later than 3 months before commencement of Industrial Attachment).
  10. Organize and co-ordinate supervisory visits to students at I. T. sites.
  11. Ensure students SIWES logbooks are examined, vetted, and signed by University Supervisors, Industry-based Supervisors, and ITF staff.
  12. Effectively follow up ITF on all payments to students and the University.
  13. Capture students bank details at the point of registration for SIWES.
  14. Develop and sustain the right attitude and mindset among supervisors thus motivating them to effectively play their supervisory role to the maximum benefit of students during SIWES.
  15. Prepare and submit reports on the scheme to the ITF after the programme.
  16. Resolve problems arising from Industrial Training during and after the training.
  17. Develop and track relevant data on students SIWES to facilitate the development of a SIWES database for the University.
  18. Ensure accreditation of MTU SIWES Center by NUC.
  19. Work with relevant Colleges/ Departments to ensure accreditation of courses for approved SIWES programme.
  20. Liaise and build a good relationship between the University and relevant organisations (NUC, ITF, Industries, etc.).

Students going for Industrial Training are expected to satisfy the academic requirements of their College, Department, or/ and Academic Planning for SIWES eligibility. Hence yearly lists of students eligible for SIWES are to be generated by Colleges or/ and Departments, and collated by the SIWES Center for timely processing and submission to ITF through NUC.

Students are expected to complete their logbooks and all relevant forms, and submit these to the University at the end of SIWES. On return, at the end of the SIWES, each student will write a technical report and submit same to the University. Post SIWES seminar will be presented by students after the SIWES programme in the department.
