Accounting and Finance
The general philosophy of undergraduate training in the accounting programme is to provide the students with quality education and training that will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self-confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of Accounting.
Mission-Philosophy of the Department
The mission of the Department of Accounting and Finance is (1) to provide high quality academic curriculum for accounting and finance majors at the undergraduate level, (2) to stimulate and support high quality research, scholarship, and publication, (3) to provide service, largely through committee representation to the University, the College of Humanities Management and Social Sciences, the Department, the academic accounting and finance communities, and the accounting and finance profession, and (4) to foster faculty interaction with the public in ways which enhance the common good.
The career opportunities available for graduates of the Accounting Programme include but not limited to the following: Directors, Finance Managers, Policy Accountants, Independent Auditors, Investment Analysts, Administrators, Career Diplomats, Accountants, Accounting Managers, Budget Analysts, Certified Internal Auditors, Chief Financial Officers, Forensic Accountants, Public Sector Accountants, Tax Practitioners, Lecturers, etc.
The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Accounting are to:
a) To produce high level accounting personnel that can contribute to the development of accounting practice through researches and publications.
b) Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems relating to accounting in the management of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations;
c) Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making; especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems;
d) Develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills in accounting/management.
e) Provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development.
For admission into any of the first degree programmes of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:
- Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
- Candidates seeking admission by Direct Entry into 200 level must have at least five (5) O’ level credits, with a minimum of two (2) relevant subjects at Advanced level or approved equivalents.
(i) UTME Candidates (4-Year Degree Programme)
To qualify for entry into the 4-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, a candidate must fulfil the following:
- Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects from the following: Geography, Biology, Commerce, Government, Account and Book-keeping at not more than two sittings.
- Sit and earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
(ii) Direct Entry Candidates (3-Year Degree Programme)
To qualify for entry into the 3-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, a candidate must fulfil the following:
- Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects from the following: Geography, Biology, Commerce, Government, Account and Book-keeping at not more than two sittings.
- Possess three A’ Level passes in the relevant commercial courses acceptable to the University.
- Possess Ordinary National Diploma Lower Credit in relevant courses including Accounting, Finance, Insurance, Banking and other Financial Studies courses.
- Possess National Certificate of Education, Merit in relevant courses including Accounting, Finance, Insurance, Banking and other Financial Studies courses.
(iii) Professional Bodies and Examinations
To qualify for entry into the 3-year programme for the award of a B.Sc. Degree in Accounting, a candidate must fulfil the following:
- Possess Five O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects from the following: Geography, Biology, Commerce, Government, Account and Book-keeping at not more than two sittings.
- Possess Final level pass of ICAN-ATS and Foundation pass of recognized professional bodies such as ICAN, ACCA (London), CIMA (UK), CIBN, CITN and others who are members of International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
