Economics
Economists learn that behaviour partly depends on experience and partly on people’s perceptions of what is expected to happen. The behaviour may change when unanticipated events occur. Effective decision making requires the skill of reacting in a context where people’s behaviour is based on expectations that may be confounded by subsequent surprises. Economists are trained to recognise that important decisions often relate to small variations in key variables and parameters. An action is worth undertaking if the additional benefit that accrues is greater than the additional cost incurred.
A student of Economics is expected to be fully aware of the importance of the marginality analyses relative to the use of average. He should also have the following attributes: high sense of purpose; possess commitment to discipline, handwork, excellence and self-reliance; possess high sense of probity and accountability and high sense of patriotism.
A graduate in Economics who has attained the threshold level should :
- Demonstrate knowledge of economic concepts and principles.
- Demonstrate knowledge of economic theory and modelling approaches.
- Demonstrate awareness of quantitative methods and computing techniques appropriate to their programmes of study, and show an appreciation of the contexts in which these techniques and methods are relevant .
- Display knowledge of sources of content of economic data and evidence and appreciate what methods might be appropriately applied to the analyses of such
- Know how to apply economic reasoning to policy issues.
- Demonstrate knowledge in an appropriate number of specialized areas in Economics.
- Display awareness of the possibility that many economic problems may admit more than one approach and may have more than one solution.
The major objectives of the degree programme in Economics are:
- to equip the students with adequate academic knowledge in Economics which will enable them to compare well with their counterparts in the leading Nigerian Universities and in those of the developed countries.
- to provide the students with analytical skills and techniques for analyzing and solving the Nigerian economic and business problems.
- to activate and stimulate the latent entrepreneurial talents in the students and to equip them with the necessary analytical tools and skills that will transform them to successful entrepreneurs, capable of setting up their own businesses.
- and above all, to infuse in them moral uprightness, self-respect and patriotism. The College environment and the academic programmes are structured to inculcate dedication to duty, consideration for others, moral uprightness and self-reliance. They are empowered to excel.
For admission into any of the first degree programmes of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:
- Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
- Candidates seeking admission by Direct Entry into 200 level must have at least five (5) O’ level credits, with a minimum of two (2) relevant subjects at Advanced level or approved equivalents.
A. Admission Requirement: Four-Year Degree Programme in Economics
The Four Year Degree Programme in Economics
- Candidates must have obtained credit passes in five subjects at a sitting or six subjects at not more than two sittings at ‘O’ Level/Senior Secondary Certificate (WAEC, NECO etc.) Examinations. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
- Candidates must take at the UTME, English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other Arts of Social Sciences subjects.
- Candidates must succeed in Screening Test.
B. Admission Requirement: Three-Year Degree Programme in Economics.
To be considered for admission into the 3-year degree programme, candidates must have passed, at credit level, five subjects including English Language, Economics and Mathematics at the Senior Secondary School Certificates/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent; as well as Economics and at least one of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government at the G.C.E, Advanced level.
(Note: Commerce is not one of the subjects accepted in the Department of Economics)
