The aim and objectives of the Center of Excellence in Music are:

• To create an academic environment where faculty, staff and visiting scholars thrive and collaborate, adding scholarly knowledge to music academia whilst broadening the creative scope of applied and functional music, locally and internationally.
• To be a research and teaching center of excellence for the study and performance of African, especially Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba music (traditional, modern art and popular).
• To establish a frontline music research and performance institution that attracts and retains outstanding scholars and teaching staff.
• To identify and nurture raw musical talents, bringing them to the realm of true professionalism as music scholars and practitioners in the multi-faceted field of music (African and Western), applying modern teaching techniques in an environment equipped with a state-of-the-art infrastructure, putting technology to optimal use.
• To afford students unlimited access to accomplished educators and performers whilst having hands-on research, composition and performance opportunities.
• To equip students with the tools for professional life in the music industry through mentoring, career development clinics and assistance in securing participatory opportunities for conferences, study abroad programmes, festivals and master classes.
• To provide music appreciation and basic musicianship programmes for music non-majors, hence, developing an informed university community that embraces music as integral to liberal arts education.
• To facilitate cross-disciplinary research between i.) the different music fields, and ii.) the music department and other departments, as well as promote collaboration between students and faculty members through performances and publications.
• To enrich the socio-cultural life of the university and Nigeria at large through festivals, concerts, workshops, lecture/demonstrations, conferences and other public events.

1. UTME
(a) O’ Level subjects

Candidates must have at least five (5) credits at the SSCE (or its equivalents) in English Language and any other four subjects chosen from Social Sciences, Arts and Natural Sciences at not more than two sittings.
While a Credit pass in Music at SSCE level is not mandatory it is desirable.
A minimum of Grade 5 Certificate of the Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM), Mountain Top International Music School (MIMS), Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) or Trinity College of Music (TCM) will be considered as an equivalent of an SSCE Music credit pass.

(b) UTME Subjects

English Language, and any other three subjects

2. Direct Entry

Two A Level passes including Music.
Candidates with the following qualifications are eligible to apply for admission into 2nd year of the Music Programme:
• Joint University Provisional Examination Board (JUPEB) - Music
• OND from a recognized institution with a minimum of Upper Credit
• NCE (Music Major) not less than Merit
Candidates with minimum of Grade 7 Certificate from any of the following bodies: Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM), Mountain Top International Music School (MIMS), Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) or Trinity College of Music (TCM) may also be considered.

3. Conversion Programme

For admission into the Conversion Programme (3rd year of the Bachelors Music Programme), MTU will consider candidates with the following qualifications:
• Distinction in Music at HND Level
• Diploma Certificate from the following institutions:
• Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM), Mountaintop International Music School (MIMS), Music Society of Nigeria (MUSON), Trinity College of Music (TCM) or from other recognized institutions.
The basic entry requirements of ‘O’ level credits in 5 subjects including English language must be satisfied by ALL applicants.
