DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES

The programme is designed to meet advanced training in all aspects of Applied Geophysics for future challenges. Graduates will be resourceful in the following careers:

  • Work as Geoscientist in the Oil sector for Oil exploration and production with adequate knowledge in Seismic Interpretation, Well log and Petrophysical interpretation from our resourced workstation
  • Work in Solid Mineral sector, by exploring for solid minerals needed for national development.
  • Work in engineering and construction sector as engineering geophysicist.
  • Work in environmental company/agencies as an environmental geophysicist needed in mapping spillage from Oil, leachates from dumpsites, toxins from industries and other Environmental Impact and Assessment (EIA) applications of Geophysics.
  • Work as hydrologist in Water Resources Company by delineating suitable depth for drilling boreholes, study water resources evaluation, abstraction, mitigation and control in government agencies.
  • Researcher in reputable institutions of higher learning.

The specific objectives of the Applied Geophysics Programme among others are to:

  1. Impact basic and fundamental knowledge in all areas of Applied Geophysics.
  2. Provide the necessary training and exposure in all aspects of Applied Geophysics that is in the forefront of development such as in hydrocarbon and groundwater exploration, environmental pollution detection and remediation, Dam site, Roads and other Civil Engineering construction site investigations.
  3. Develop the necessary work force needed for industrial, technological, research, and academic purposes in all aspects of Applied Geophysics.
  4. Provide effective teaching, research, and practical oriented/field work programmes that are required in all the fields of Applied Geophysics.
  5. Offer opportunities for full development of Applied Geophysics to meet the ever-growing challenges in the industry, private sector, and government services that are required for the overall growth and development of the nation and mankind.
